I have been lucky enough for inherit a few old pieces of my Teak Furniture but they are in serious need of care.

Can you recommend a process?

Should we go through to try to get its original shineback?

I have tried various furniture oils and they absorb it instantly but no matter how much I rub a shine does not appear.

Firstly the teak furniture will never shine up use only with oil. What you need for a good shine is wax. Rather that just use Cobra wax, super Wax, or Kiwi Wax straight out of the tin, use it as part of a really effective polish.

This method was given to me by a “Bali man”, who came to check out our finishing our leather furniture for new home. (thanks again).

Melt gently together a mixture comprising one-third wax, one-third beeswax and one-third paraffin. In your case, because you have already put so much oil on the furniture, reduce the amount of paraffin.

Regular polishing with this mixture should give you the shine you want, though it won‘t happen overnight.

For the second query, you could, of course, allow the brass to acquire a turquoise, verdigris appearance – pretty for some, but no shine. Lacquering the brass is helpful only up to a point as it invariably deteriorates and tarnished spots appear, leaving you with the difficult job of cleaning it off completely and starting all over again.

The most helpful protection would be to clean the plates with a really good polish, buff up until there is not a mark on your cloth and then apply a slick of furniture polish or wax. You can apply this method for your wooden craft or wooden gift
